Eating Disorders & Trauma

Eating disorders and trauma are often linked, a significant portion of people with eating disorders have experienced some form of trauma in their lives.

This can be complex and not always fully understood, but there are several possible explanations:

Trauma can disrupt emotional regulation. People who have experienced trauma may have difficulty managing their emotions, leading them to turn to food or unhealthy eating behaviours as a way to cope with difficult feelings.

For example, someone who is struggling with anxiety may use restrictive eating to feel a sense of control, while someone who is dealing with depression may use binge eating to numb their emotions.

Trauma can lead to body image issues. People who have experienced trauma, especially physical or sexual abuse, may develop negative body image and self-esteem, which can contribute to the development of an eating disorder.

They may believe that they are not worthy of love or care, and they may use eating disorder behaviours as a way to punish themselves or make themselves feel smaller or less noticeable.

Trauma can disrupt brain development. Trauma can have a significant impact on the developing brain, particularly in areas related to emotion regulation and impulse control.

This can make individuals more vulnerable to developing eating disorders, as they may have difficulty managing their emotions and impulses in healthy ways.

It is important to note that not everyone who experiences trauma will develop an eating disorder.

Many other factors can contribute to the development of these disorders, such as genetics, family history, and social pressures.

However, if you have experienced trauma and are struggling with an eating disorder, it is important to seek professional help.

Treatment for eating disorders often includes therapy to address the underlying trauma, as well as nutritional counselling and support groups.

Remember, you are not alone. Some people care about you and want to help you recover.

More and more people were coming to me with complex issues, and in some cases, I felt a little out of my depth.

On recent occasions, I had to do my research based on and around trauma-related problems before I even started the healing process and journey with my clients.

This training has helped me expand my knowledge and understanding. So, please if you know anyone who would benefit from my help direct them to my website. I have some wonderful and informative healing programs. I have added a link below.
